Background of the Study
Digital pragmatic strategies refer to the methods users employ to convey intended meaning, negotiate social relationships, and express attitudes beyond literal language. In Nigeria, platforms such as Twitter and Instagram have become fertile grounds for innovative pragmatic practices. Twitter, with its limited character count, necessitates the use of abbreviations, emoticons, and hashtag cues to signal tone and intent. Conversely, Instagram, which integrates visual content with captions, fosters a blend of textual and non-verbal cues that shape user interactions. These platforms allow users to convey irony, humor, sarcasm, and cultural references through carefully crafted messages and visual elements (Adeniyi, 2023). This study assesses how Nigerian users strategically manipulate language and visuals to achieve desired pragmatic effects. It explores the interplay between cultural context and digital affordances, analyzing how features like hashtags, emojis, and images contribute to meaning-making. By examining real-life examples from Twitter and Instagram, the research provides insights into the evolution of digital pragmatics and its role in redefining social interactions in Nigeria (Chukwu, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although digital pragmatics is recognized as a key aspect of online communication, there is limited research focusing on the specific strategies employed by Nigerian users on Twitter and Instagram. Current studies often overlook the integration of visual and textual elements in conveying pragmatic meaning, which is crucial in the Nigerian context. This study seeks to bridge this gap by investigating how users deploy digital pragmatic strategies to negotiate meaning and social relationships on these platforms. The absence of detailed empirical data on this phenomenon hampers the development of robust theoretical models that account for the complexity of digital interaction in culturally diverse environments (Ibrahim, 2024).

To examine digital pragmatic strategies on Twitter and Instagram.
To analyze the role of visual and textual cues in conveying meaning.
To develop a framework for understanding digital pragmatics in Nigerian social media.
Research Questions:
What pragmatic strategies are evident on Twitter and Instagram?
How do visual elements contribute to pragmatic meaning?
What cultural factors influence these digital pragmatic practices?
